“Tio Lino” (Lino dos Santos Filho) is a guy who I admire. He was born and raised in Rocinha. He now lives in Jacarepagua but everyday except Sundays he is here in the comunity to open his art center for the youth in Rocinha. He runs an art studio using mostly recycled materials.
His focus is to keep kids in school and making sure they have a place to go after school and stay out of trouble. He has had hundreds of kids pass through his programs.
His studio is located in the area of Valao, which is at the bottom of the hill. The studio used to be where he lived. The area consists of a back area which can accomodate about 6 students. The middle room which right now is full of supplies and furniture. The from room or main area there are two large desks which can seat up to 15 kids comfortably. All his classes focus on developing the students creativity through art. In the early afternoons there is a “homework” club of students who come by to have a quiet place to study..
I am in the process of helping Tio get supplies and to keep the kids interested in art. As an artist myself, I 100% support what Tio is doing to help the next generations of Rocinha’s kids!
